Emre Can came off the bench as Germany got their Confederations Cup campaign up and running with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Australia on Monday afternoon.

Liverpool midfielder Can was introduced in the 78th minute of the Group B fixture in Sochi.

The man Can replaced, Lars Stindl, opened the scoring early on for the world champions, but Australia's Tom Rogic equalised four minutes before the break.

Joachim Low's Germany went in at the break ahead, though, courtesy of Julian Draxler's penalty, before Leon Goretzka put them 3-1 to the good shortly after the interval.

Tomi Juric pulled one back for the Socceroos before the hour mark, but Germany held on to their advantage to claim all three points in their opening game of the tournament.

Can and his compatriots are back in action on Thursday, when they will meet Chile in Kazan.
