James Milner is targeting maximum points from Liverpool’s final three games of the season as the Reds strive to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Last Monday’s 1-0 victory at Watford, coupled with favourable results elsewhere over the course of the weekend, means Jürgen Klopp’s team have their fate in their own hands in terms of qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Southampton visit Anfield on Sunday and while Milner is anticipating a difficult game against the Saints, he is confident of registering a win that would strengthen Liverpool’s grip on a top-four berth.

“You've got teams trying to stay up or have nothing to play for so they play with a bit more freedom,” the Reds’ No.7 told Sky Sports, in reference to the closing stages of the campaign.

“It can be a strange time of the season, every game can become really tough.

“We just want to pick up maximum points in our remaining games and we know we can do that. But every single game is tough.

“The best thing is to go out there and win our games, that's all we can concentrate on.”

Southampton knocked Liverpool out of the EFL Cup at the semi-final stage earlier this season - something Milner and his teammates have not forgotten.

“They cost us a cup final and that hurts,” he added.

“They deserved it over the two games but we need to make sure we turn that around, put in a good performance and get one back on them!”
