A victory over Arsenal at Anfield tomorrow could reignite Liverpool's season, Patrik Berger feels.

The Reds have endured a tough start to 2017, having won just two of their 12 games in all competitions since the turn of the year.

Monday night’s 3-1 defeat to Leicester City left Jürgen Klopp’s side one point behind the Gunners, who currently sit fourth and have played a game fewer than Liverpool, ahead of this weekend’s round of Premier League fixtures.

Berger, then, sees the visit of Arsene Wenger’s team as an opportunity for his former club to put their recent struggles behind them while also laying down a marker in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

“I think it’s a huge game, because the boys haven’t been playing really well lately so it could turn the season around,” the ex-Czech Republic international told Liverpoolfc.com.

“Obviously Arsenal are really close to us so it’s a huge game. I’m really hoping for a good result.”

Liverpool boast an impressive record against the fellow members of the top six so far this season, having won four and drawn four of their eight league clashes with their direct rivals in the table.

The opening weekend of the campaign saw the Reds edge a seven-goal thriller at the Emirates Stadium, and Berger believes the importance of beating Arsenal again on Saturday cannot be overstated.

“It’s a massive game. I remember just before Christmas we were talking about the possibility that we could win the league, and a few months later we’re talking about focusing on the top four,” the former No.15 added.

“I think that’s the target and in order to be close to the top four, they need to win the game.

“Everybody has a period where they don’t play well. It’s a tough season, a tough competition.

“There’s so many games so you can’t really perform at the top level every single week. I’m hoping that Liverpool have their bad period behind them and there’s still a lot to play for. If they can get a good result against Arsenal, that could be the starting point.”
