Jordan Henderson believes Liverpool must grasp the opportunity to get their season back on track as soon as possible – starting against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield today.

The Reds are still seeking a first Premier League victory of 2017, but the captain feels a confidence-boosting result can spark their campaign back into life.

He used his column in ‘This is Anfield’ to write: “January wasn’t what any of us had hoped for and it certainly wasn’t what any of us expected, from ourselves as individuals or the team. However, it’s important to view the start to the year in the context of what came before, not just since the season started but going back over the past 12 months.

“As the manager has said repeatedly, the season is still very much alive and there is still a big prize to compete for. We have a responsibility to the club, the supporters and ourselves to make this campaign a success. That is still very possible, if we get back to the standards and level of performance we produced previously.

“It’s on us to ensure it was a ‘bad month’ and not a bad season. We, as players, can still ensure this season is remembered as showing progress and achievement. Everyone at the club, from players through to all the staff, have worked extremely hard up until now and it’s vital we don’t let all that hard work go to waste because of a difficult January.

“At the risk of repeating topics I’ve mentioned previously, the reaction is the most important thing and the reaction in training this week has been just what is needed to get back on track. None of us want to waste the work we’ve put in all season and everyone in training has shown the attitude we’ll need to recapture the form we had previously.

“In football you can regain that positive feeling as quickly as it is possible to lose it. Things can turn quickly and we have the opportunity and ability to do that.”
