Jordan Henderson feels Steven Gerrard’s appointment as an Academy coach will benefit both Liverpool and England in the long term.

The Reds announced last week the 36-year-old would take up a role within the club’s youth set-up, working in the development of young players at the complex.

And Henderson is pleased by the news as he feels it will prove advantageous for club and country.

He wrote in ‘This is Anfield’: “Clearly I have a vested interest in both Liverpool and England having the best people involved at all levels, because having a thriving youth system ultimately only helps the first team for club and country going forward.

“When you look across Europe and across the world, clubs and countries that have success have players with a great attitude and mentality coming through their system and that pushes the senior lads and established players to be even better.

“Can you think of anyone better for those players to learn from? To listen to his experiences?

“He knows what it’s like to have great moments, tough moments, big successes and big setbacks. He knows what it’s like to feel the pressure and burden that comes with representing a club of this size, with all the expectation. He knows what it’s like to lead a team on the pitch, for club and country.

“I have no doubt that Stevie will go on to be a great manager one day, if that’s the route he chooses. He’s a natural leader and understands the game as well as anyone I’ve ever met; he has incredible knowledge.

“The fact he has chosen to start this new chapter of his career in the Academy shows the same values he had as a player and that he intends to take them into his coaching. That can only be good news for Liverpool and English football in general.”
