The 'style and dignity' Jürgen Klopp has brought to Liverpool since taking the reins at Anfield has caught the eye of former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso.

And the Spaniard believes his old club are destined for success under their current manager, despite the increasingly competitive nature of life in the Premier League.

Liverpool have lost just three out of their first 26 games of Klopp's first full season in charge, mounting a challenge on three fronts in the process.

Bayern Munich star Alonso, a Champions League and FA Cup winner during his five seasons on Merseyside, says having a man in charge who understands the club has been key to the recent resurgence.

“I respect him  a lot for the way he has embraced the Liverpool culture - from the start he seemed to understand just what the job meant,” he told Fox Latin America.

“He understands the hunger the fans have, but also he conducts himself with style and dignity.

“The Premier League has never been more competitive - but I really think the glory days of Liverpool Football Club could be very close again.”

Alonso, a darling of the Kop during his stint at Liverpool, knows all about the important of the game that awaits Klopp and his charges this weekend.

Reflecting on his experiences of trips to Old Trafford, he added: “Nothing means more to the fans than beating Manchester United.

“During my time at the club we didn’t have much success at Old Trafford but a win there would not only mean everything to the fans, but give Liverpool the real belief they have what it takes to win the title this season.”
