On this day 11 years ago, Liverpool played their part in a classic FA Cup third-round tie - and, for the first but not the last time in a red shirt, Xabi Alonso scored from inside his own half.

January 7, 2006 saw the Reds get a Cup campaign that would ultimately end in glory in Cardiff under way with a trip to Luton Town.

All appeared to be going to plan for Rafa Benitez's side when Steven Gerrard curled home a wonderful early opener - but their Championship opponents hit back to lead 3-1 by the hour mark.

Florent Sinama-Pongolle pulled one back before Alonso equalised with a dipping long-range effort.

Pongolle then gave the Reds the lead with 16 minutes remaining, and there was still time for Alonso to score one of the most memorable goals of his Liverpool career.

The Spanish playmaker took full advantage of the Luton goalkeeper's decision to come forward for a late set-piece by shooting into an unguarded net with his left foot from inside his own half.
