Jürgen Klopp has confirmed Philippe Coutinho is set to miss Liverpool's New Year's Eve clash with Manchester City as he continues his recovery from injury, while Joel Matip is also expected to be ruled out.

Coutinho hasn’t figured for the Reds since sustaining an ankle problem against Sunderland at Anfield on November 26.

The Brazil playmaker is making progress in his rehabilitation programme at Melwood, but the fixture with City will arrive too soon for a potential comeback – as will the return meeting with the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light on January 2.

Asked whether Coutinho could face Pep Guardiola’s side, Klopp told his pre-match press conference: “No. He is in a good way, a really good way – I spoke to him a few minutes ago.

“But the City game, for sure, is too early and if the City game is too early then I am pretty sure the Sunderland game is too early, too. That’s it.”

Klopp also admitted Liverpool are set to be without the services of Matip again as he continues to recover from an ankle issue of his own, which has kept him out of action since the home draw with West Ham United on December 11.
