There was news from Melwood, the Academy and more on Wednesday as the Liverpool first team trained their sights on Swansea City and the U23s met European opposition.

Our photographers were at Melwood on Wednesday afternoon to snap the team’s latest training session – providing a full gallery of the squad preparing for the trip to Wales to face Swansea this weekend.

Georginio Wijnaldum has been a mainstay of the Liverpool midfield so far this season and the Netherlands international spoke to us about the subtle changes in his role and settling into life on Merseyside.

Another summer signing, Sadio Mane, had cause for celebration after being voted the PFA Player of the Month in an online poll of supporters around the country. The 24-year-old continued his fine start to the campaign with a goal in last Saturday’s 5-1 win over Hull City.

Unlucky U23s…

There was bitter disappointment for the U23s at Prenton Park as a stoppage-time goal meant defeat against Wolfsburg in the Premier League International Cup.

Second-half substitute Brooks Lennon seemed to have rescued a point with a well-taken strike for Michael Beale’s side but the late, late concession handed the German visitors a 2-1 win in Group C.

On this day in LFC history…

The late Gerry Byrne made his debut for Liverpool on September 28, 1957 – the first of 333 appearances by the man who famously helped the club lift the FA Cup in 1965 despite playing most of the final with a broken collarbone.

The Reds’ meeting with Small Heath (Birmingham) on this date in 1901 is significant for the fact that it is the subject of the oldest known footage of Anfield. Click play below to watch it for free.
