Jon Flanagan believes a season-long stay with Burnley is just what he needs to put his injury nightmare firmly behind him.

After playing an integral role in the title charge of two seasons ago, the 23-year-old missed the entirety of 2015-16 due to knee problems, and only returned to action in January of this year.

Now, he is hoping to prove his fitness by featuring regularly for Sean Dyche's newly promoted team after agreeing a loan deal that will keep him in Lancashire for the rest of the campaign.

"The injury happened but hopefully I’m past that now and I can push on to play as many games as I can in the Premier League," he told Burnley's matchday programme.

"It’s very tough and so frustrating but I’m mentally tough and now I’ve come out the other end positively. It’s been great here so far.

"The lads have made me feel extremely welcome and I’m enjoying training, but I can’t wait to start.

"It’s tough for places at Liverpool and the manager said there might not be as much game time.

"I had a couple of options but I spoke to the gaffer here and I felt this was the right place to push on."

Flanagan may be set to spend the season away from Anfield but, as a boyhood Reds fan, he will keeping a close eye on the club's progress.

And the Scouse defender expects big things from Jürgen Klopp and his team.

"I think there is a lot of belief there now and a lot of fight," he added.

"I feel like they’ll do well this year with the one game a week and no European football.

"That will do them well and hopefully they’ll be up there challenging."
