There was heartache for Liverpool's England contingent on Monday evening as their Euro 2016 dreams were ended by a 2-1 defeat to Iceland.

Roy Hodgson's team were undone at the last-16 stage as Wayne Rooney's early penalty was cancelled out by goals from Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson.

Daniel Sturridge played 90 minutes for the Three Lions, and it was his delicious through-ball that split the Icelandic defence to allow Raheem Sterling to win the early spot-kick that the captain subsequently converted.

However, the opposition were level within two minutes and ahead by the time the clock ticked over to 18.

Despite pressure from England, Iceland held on thanks to an admirable rearguard action to keep their incredible story at the European Championship alive.

Nathaniel Clyne, James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana were unused substitutes during the contest.
