Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg says he knows all about the qualities new 'keeper Loris Karius will bring to the club next season.

The 22-year-old is currently preparing for his first pre-season campaign as a Red, having agreed a move to Anfield from Mainz last month.

And Achterberg has revealed he is aware of what to expect from the German during those early training sessions, after monitoring his progress in the Bundesliga over the past two years.

"Loris is a good young 'keeper who will come in to compete and show what he’s about," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"He had an excellent season in Germany. I’ve watched him closely since 2014.

"I try to follow every keeper aged 15 to 27 in every league across Europe and the rest of the world."

With Simon Mignolet and Danny Ward already at Anfield, Karius faces a battle to secure the No.1 jersey on a regular basis next term.

But Achterberg is confident that this competition for places can only be a good thing for all three shot-stoppers.

"Every club needs competition for places as that brings out the best in players. It’s normal in football for players to be fighting for places," he added.

"As well as Simon and Loris, there’s Danny Ward, who was excellent for Wales in their opening game of the Euros.

"We’ve also got some talented young keepers coming through so it’s good times."
