Take a look at the key events and highlights from this date in Liverpool FC's illustrious history as we delve into our archives…

He's Czech, he's great...

In 2002, Vladimir Smicer scored a wonderful injury-time volley against Chelsea to put Liverpool at the top of the table.

The substitute sent Anfield into delirium by making it 1-0 in the closing seconds of the contest with a stunning strike from 12 yards out.

The result put Gerard Houllier's men one point clear of Manchester United in the Premier League.

Fowler honest after winning penalty...

Robbie Fowler sparked controversy when he disputed the referee's decision to award him a penalty at Highbury in 1997.

The striker took a tumble over Arsenal's onrushing David Seaman and, much to his surprise, referee Gerald Ashby pointed to the spot.

Despite Fowler insisting it wasn't a foul, he took up the responsibility and missed the resulting penalty.

However, Jason McAteer was on hand to score the rebound and make it 2-0 to Roy Evans' men, after Stan Collymore gave the visitors the lead.

Ian Wright scored a consolation for the Gunners but the Reds held on to stay within reach of leaders Manchester United in the Premier League.

'We've just beaten the best team in Germany'...

Liverpool travelled to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of their 1971 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup quarter-final tie with a three-goal advantage from the Anfield fixture.

Ian Ross all but secured the Reds' place in the following round after his goal at the Sechzger Stadium in the 75th minute.

Bayern made it 1-1 on the night but Liverpool recorded a famous 4-1 aggregate victory.

The result prompted boss Bill Shankly to say: "We were great. We've just beaten the best team in Germany, because Bayern will win the national championship."
