An impressive run of form has Joe Allen knocking on the door for a place in Liverpool's Barclays Premier League line-up ahead of Saturday's clash with Sunderland.

The Welsh midfielder made a series of key contributions during January, scoring a late equaliser against Arsenal, finding the target in the FA Cup win over Exeter City and keeping his nerve during the Capital One Cup shootout with Stoke City.

But Allen has only started once in the league so far this season, though Jürgen Klopp admitted at his pre-match press conference that the No.24 is providing food for thought.

Asked about his chances, the boss said: “[He is] very close. He got a little knock on the shoulder at Leicester – not the biggest problem but a little problem.

“Hopefully, everything is OK. We have to see how he feels today. But [he is] very close, in good shape, obviously good shape and that’s very important for us.”
