Sheyi Ojo is hoping his impressive senior debut for Liverpool against Exeter City on Friday night can be the start of extended involvement in the first-team squad.

The 18-year-old entered the action as a second-half substitute at St James Park, with the Reds trailing 2-1 to the League Two side.

Within moments, Ojo had played a key role in the equaliser, suppling the cross that caused confusion inside the home side’s box and allowed Brad Smith to lash home to make it 2-2 and secure a replay.

“It was a great feeling,” Ojo told the Liverpool Echo afterwards. “I’ve been looking forward to that moment for a long time and it came tonight so I’m really happy.

“Before I came on the manager just told me to relax and to express myself. He asked me to try to get the team back in the game with a goal or an assist.

“I was thankful for the way it went for me. Hopefully I made an impact on the game.

“It was just unfortunate we couldn’t get the win but credit to Exeter because they played well and made it difficult for us.

“We’ll take it back to Anfield now. If I am involved in the replay then I’ll try to make an impact again.”

Ojo only returned to Melwood on Thursday after Liverpool recalled him from his season-long loan spell with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The England U19 international made 19 appearances for the Championship side and believes it was an experience he benefitted from greatly.

“I am pleased to be back at Liverpool but I’m also thankful for everything that Wolves did for me,” added Ojo.

“The time away really helped me. The Championship is a difficult league with a lot of good teams and I’ve taken all those experiences on board.

“I only came back on Thursday. I didn’t know for definite that I was going to be in the squad until the manager announced it earlier in the day.

“I was just hoping that I might be able to get on and make a contribution. I am looking to kick on my Liverpool career now.

“My main aim is to push on and try to play in the Premier League with Liverpool. I’ve just got to keep working hard and listening to what the coaches are telling me.”
