Ian Rush rolled back the years to help Liverpool Legends defeat their Australian counterparts 4-0 by scoring in the red shirt once more - a moment the striker says he will never forget.

The club’s all-time leading goalscorer came off the bench in the second half at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney to feature for Gerard Houllier’s team of Anfield heroes.

And within minutes of entering the fray he was back doing what he does best, as a close-range finish from John Arne Riise’s cross saw him get on the scoresheet.

Reflecting on the moment, Rush told Liverpoolfc.com: “It was absolutely great. I thought the team were fantastic today and it's nice to come off the bench and score for once.

“You never forget scoring but it's always nice. I remember all my goals and I'll remember this one as well.

“When we came out and they sang 'You'll Never Walk Alone, I thought it was absolutely fantastic.

“It gets the crowd and players going. It's absolutely incredible. It's always nice to entertain these supporters who have been fantastic and with four goals I think they'll be happy.

“I thought Melbourne in 2013 was incredible, we went to Brisbane and now Sydney. It never ceases to amaze you. When you get support like this, you always think 'we'll be back here' because the supporters have been so good.”

Rush also singled out strike partner John Aldridge for praise, a player he was often told he was incapable of linking up with during the pair's best years.

He added: “Everyone says that! As long as we're scoring, it’s fine. We're great inside the six-yard box.

“It's all about the service as well. John Arne [Riise] came in on that left-hand side and put in great crosses for Aldo and myself, you'd like them all day!"

On the topic of lining up alongside Steven Gerrard, the Welshman said: "It was amazing. When you think you're not going to get the ball, he's already seen you.

“Gerrard is only coming to the end of his career, so imagine what he was like five years ago. He'd be a joy to play with.”
