Jordan Henderson and Brad Smith were pleased to start Liverpool's Europa League clash with FC Sion on Thursday night for different reasons as top spot was confirmed by Jürgen Klopp's side.

An uneventful goalless draw in Switzerland meant both teams progressed to the competition’s knockout stages and the Reds claimed first place in Group B.

For Henderson, it was a return to the starting line-up for the first time since mid-August. Smith, meanwhile, was handed a maiden chance from the off by Klopp.

And while the game itself may not live long in the memory, both men could take satisfaction on a personal level from their run-outs at the Stade Tourbillon.

The captain told BT Sport: “It was nice to play 75 minutes. It was a tough game in tough conditions. But we’re top of the group and we move forward.

“[My fitness] was tested tonight on that pitch and I had no problem. Hopefully I’ve just got to keep managing it – it’s been fine so far.

“It was Brad’s first start and I thought he was outstanding, brilliant going up and down the left flank. He was dangerous for us, getting good crosses in.”

Smith himself added: “To get my first start for Liverpool is an honour. As Hendo said, it was tough conditions but it’s good to get the draw and top the group.”
