Kolo Toure expects Christian Benteke's clinical winner against Bordeaux to further increase the striker's confidence as he continues to make an impressive transition to life with Liverpool.

The No.9 notched his fifth goal for the club in the closing moments of the first half by expertly controlling a cross from Nathaniel Clyne and lashing a fierce blast into the net on the turn.

It completed a comeback for Jürgen Klopp’s team, who had trailed to Henri Saivet’s set-piece goal before James Milner converted a penalty and Benteke produced the decider.

His finish helped to book Liverpool’s spot in the Europa League knockout stages with a game to spare and was just reward for the Belgium international, according to Toure.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: “Christian is a top player. He was fantastic for Aston Villa and now he is coming into the team better and better.

“For a striker, you need goals. He scored one goal and that will be really important for him and his confidence will grow.

“We saw he was defending and fighting for the team. That’s what we need, we all need to fight for the same goals to win games.”

Having drawn each of their opening three fixtures in Group B 1-1, the win over Bordeaux lifted Liverpool above FC Sion to the top of the section.

Their response to falling behind with 33 minutes played at Anfield was impressive and the scoreline was overturned before the referee called for half-time.

“It was a tough game, we played against a really good side,” said Toure, who made his 50th appearance for the Reds on the night.

“In the first half we played well and at the end we came we back very well. It was a good team effort. We found a way to win, that was the most important thing.

“If you want to be a top team, it doesn’t matter what situation happens you just need to carry on playing. The most important thing is to win at the end and that’s what we did.”
