Ian Rush felt Liverpool Legends didn't take care of the ball well enough during their 4-2 defeat to Manchester United in Stockholm.

The Reds took a first-half lead thanks to Vladimir Smicer's strike but, by the end, needed a consolation from David Thompson to reduce the deficit in the final scoreline.

United boasted a number of players who appeared to have lost little pace since hanging up their boots and entering the legends arena, but Rush insisted that was not the issue for his team.

Instead, the Welshman explained that sloppiness in possession was what did for Liverpool at the Friends Arena.

"We had a young team but it's mentally how you play," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"It's no good just looking good you've got to perform as well, and they knew what to do.

"They knew when to keep the ball - that's what we learn at Liverpool, just keep the ball.

"We didn't do that in the first, we were a bit better second half, but when you're winning it's so much easier to let the ball do the work.

"That's what we've always done, in training you pass and move, that's what it's all about.

"If you don't give the ball away, the opposition can't score.

"Unfortunately today we gave the ball away way too much against a decent side."

Rush, who appeared as a second-half substitute during the defeat, also called for the first team to atone for the Legends' defeat by getting one over on the Red Devils.

Brendan Rodgers' side travel to Old Trafford for a Barclays Premier League clash with United on September 12, and the club's record goalscorer is hoping for something to cheer.

"I just went in the dressing room and all the lads were really quiet," he added.

"The lads are disappointed, especially when you lose to Manchester United.

"There's only thing for it now, we've got the first team playing next week and they've got to do a favour for us now and get a result!"
