When Jordan Williams received his first call-up for the Wales national team last week he couldn't quite believe it.

The Academy starlet, on a season-long loan at Swindon Town, is in Chris Coleman’s squad for crunch Euro 2016 qualifiers against Cyprus this evening and then against Israel on Sunday.

The 19-year-old has been in impressive form so far at the County Ground, and his strong displays have been rewarded with a berth in the national side.

However, upon receiving the call-up, Williams worried about whether there had been a case of mistaken identity.

"A few times in the squad it's said J Williams - Jonny Williams who plays for Crystal Palace - so I thought it was him,” admitted the midfielder.

“I was like, 'It can't be me'.

"I had texts on my phone saying 'congratulations' and I didn't know what they were on about to start with.

"But then I checked it and it was me so I was delighted.”

Williams will miss two games for Swindon Town due to his involvement with Wales, but he admits he has thoroughly enjoyed his loan experience so far, playing alongside two Liverpool teammates in Kevin Stewart and Lawrence Vigouroux.

He said: "I played for the U21s last season but since then I've been at Swindon and I've been playing regular football. I've got the experience that I've needed to maybe push on into the first team and it can only benefit me.

"I'm obviously gutted that I'm missing two games but I'm sure the lads will do the job.

"We've started off well but maybe we could have won more games than we have.

"The squad's brilliant and we're clicking now. It's taken a bit of time because in pre-season players were coming in and players were going out."

Victories for Coleman’s charges in their next two qualifiers would seal Wales' place at a major finals for the first time since 1958.

Should that happen, Williams would then find himself competing for a place in the squad for the European Championships, which would represent a dream come true for the youngster.

"We've always had to watch England, our biggest rivals, in the World Cup and the Euros," Williams added.

"Just for us to be involved with something like that would be an incredible experience and a lot of us can't explain what it would mean for the country.

“We've always had good players in Wales but getting to the World Cup and the Euros has been hard for us and for players to show what they can do.

“Everyone's excited for the future with Wales and if we get to the Euros it will be incredible."
