Liverpool are already yielding the benefits of the defensive organisational work they put in during pre-season training, according to Simon Mignolet.

The Reds haven’t conceded a goal so far, keeping a trio of clean sheets in their opening three matches of the campaign.

Mignolet feels much of that is owed to the meticulous efforts they put in on the training pitch over the summer, as well as the current camaraderie within the dressing room.

The goalkeeper told Liverpoolfc.com: “The team spirit is there and everybody is prepared to work for each other.

“From an organisational point of view, we’ve been working really hard in pre-season with the coaches to make sure everybody is well organised.

“You don’t defend with just the back four, it’s with the whole team and I think everybody is doing their jobs really well at the moment in that aspect of our game.”

Liverpool’s defensive ranks were bolstered by deals that were done in the early part of the summer in the shape of Adam Bogdan, Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez.

The swiftness with which the Reds acted in order to tie up those signings has also had a positive impact, believes Mignolet.

“When the new lads came in, the good thing was they all had a chance to settle in,” he said. “Most of the business was done before the start of the tour, very early in pre-season.

“They had the chance to settle in and get to know the other lads. From a training perspective, it’s easier to work on things.

“We try to be well organised and throughout pre-season we worked really hard on that.”

Given his tender age and elevation from the Championship where he was with Charlton Athletic, the impact of Gomez has been cause for plenty of plaudits.

The 18-year-old has operated at left-back – a change from his regular centre-back spot – and performed with astonishing maturity since initially being deployed there in the friendly with Brisbane Roar in Australia last month.

Mignolet said: “He’s come from the Championship and he’s only young, but he doesn’t look it. He has all the abilities to become a very good Premier League defender – he’s quick, strong and can play it with his feet.

“He’s settled in unbelievably well and he has a great future ahead of him.”

Alongside him, Dejan Lovren has enjoyed a commanding opening to 2015-16 next to Martin Skrtel.

Earlier this summer, the Croatia centre-back acknowledged his determination to improve on his maiden campaign at Anfield after joining from Southampton last July.

“The first season at Liverpool is not always easy, but we know what Dejan can do and what he shows in training every day, where he works hard,” said Mignolet.

“At the moment, we’re so organised and every single individual player benefits from that. He helps us with that and I am sure he will keep doing it throughout the season.”

It’s not just in defensive areas that Mignolet feels Liverpool have improved.

The No.22 is convinced his Belgium international teammate Christian Benteke will prove an outstanding acquisition in attack for the Reds.

“I knew what he could do for us and I’m sure he will do well this year,” he stated. “He’s got the experience of playing in the Premier League with Aston Villa, he’s an international footballer and all the ability he has got will help us and benefit the team.

“He can keep the ball for us up front and links up really well with all of the talent we’ve got up there. I am sure he and Philippe, for example, can be a very dangerous partnership for us this year.”

Meanwhile, Mignolet also had words of praise for the manner in which Jordan Rossiter acquitted himself on his Barclays Premier League debut for Liverpool at Arsenal on Monday.

The 18-year-old appeared unfazed after coming on as a 75th-minute substitute at the Emirates.

“When you have to come on as a substitute at the Emirates when it’s 0-0 with 15 minutes to play, it’s not something easy,” said Mignolet. “But it didn’t faze him, he didn’t think about it.

“He came in and did his job, worked hard and played a good 15 minutes.

“He’s somebody who will do well for us in the future; he’s working hard in training and in the gym to make sure that he can compete with all the lads here and he’s got a great future ahead of him.”
