Fara Williams' dream of Women's World Cup glory was ended in the most heartbreaking fashion overnight, as England were eliminated by reigning champions Japan.

The Liverpool Ladies midfielder started the semi-final clash in Edmonton, Canada and featured for 86 minutes of a game that her country controlled for long spells.

It was her penalty five minutes before the interval that levelled the score after Aya Miyama had earlier put Japan ahead by converting from 12 yards herself.

England were on the front foot for much of the second half, creating a number of opportunities and striking the woodwork on several occasions.

The contest seemed destined for extra time and possibly penalties until a cruel own goal from Laura Bassett in stoppage time handed victory and a place in the final to Japan.
