Sunday's All-Star charity match at Anfield is the product of an incredible effort by the Liverpool FC Foundation that will have effects that will be felt long after the final whistle is blown.

Over several months, the Reds' official charity has diligently organised an occasion that has captured the imagination of the city - as proved by the speed with which tickets sold out.

European greats are going to congregate on Merseyside to participate for one of two star-studded teams, selected and captained by Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

Xabi Alonso, Thierry Henry, Pepe Reina, Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres are just a handful of the elite names lending their support and football skills for a truly special game in L4.

But it's about more than just the match. The event will be raising money for the programmes provided by the foundation in the community and other beneficial charities around the city.

This week, we have already examined how the All-Star contest will help Alder Hey Children's Hospital, a variety of initiatives in Liverpool, plus the education and men's health work of the foundation.

Funds generated from the occasion will also play a part in the Liverpool FC Foundation's ongoing support for military veterans through the Barracks to Bootroom programme.

The project aims to help military veterans on Merseyside back into civilian life with local coaching and football tournaments, promoting self-confidence and teamwork.

In addition to training and education opportunities, football offers a platform for physical activity, general good health and wellbeing via weekly training sessions and more.

The foundation welcomes ex-military service men and women into five-a-side competitions and 11-a-side games in an attempt to make positive and sustainable changes to veterans' lives.

"The programme has helped me so much to readjust to civilian life," said Jason Malloy, one participant in the programme. "It's great to be able to speak to other ex-service personnel about their experiences and continue to work together as part of a team."
