It was a bad start to the season for Liverpool U18s as a very young line-up lost 7-1 at Stoke City in the opening game on Saturday.

With the majority of Neil Critchley's squad competing in the Otten Cup against the likes of Real Madrid in Holland, coach Mike Garrity took charge of the team.

The side consisted of three U16 players and first year scholars and it was a tough day to day the least.

Callum Nicholas fired a consolation for the Reds.

Garrity told Liverpoolfc.com: "It was a really difficult day for the young lads and we have to forget about this quickly, learn lessons and move on.

"We actually started the game well but soon found ourselves 4-1 down at half-time and in the second half we crumbled a bit."
