New Liverpool midfielder Emre Can will follow in the footsteps of former Reds defender Jamie Carragher by wearing No.23 for the club.

The German youth international sealed his switch to Anfield last Thursday after a deal had been agreed in principle with Bayer Leverkusen last month.

As Brendan Rodgers' side kick off pre-season preparations today, it was confirmed that Can has opted for a number that has been vacant since Carragher's retirement in 2013.

"What an honour," the 20-year-old commented. Another previous incumbent of the number was former Liverpool goal-getter Robbie Fowler.
