Simon Mignolet remained on the bench as Belgium lost 1-0 to Argentina in the quarter-finals of the World Cup on Saturday evening.

The only goal of the game arrived on eight minutes when following a move instigated by Lionel Messi, Lazio striker Gonzalo Higuain drilled home a superb shot from the edge of the box.

Higuain also fired a brilliant effort against the bar in the second half and with former Red Javier Mascherano in magnificent form in front of the back four, Belgium struggled to break through the Argentine rearguard.

Marouane Fellaini sent a header over the top but try as they might, Belgium couldn't find an equaliser.

Former kop stars Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez can now look forward to a semi-final against Holland or Costa Rica on Wednesday night.
