As Steven Gerrard had promised, he and Luis Suarez put their friendship to one side for 90 minutes as England met Uruguay at the World Cup – but, after the final whistle, their mutual respect was there for all to see.
The Liverpool captain and the Reds' top scorer were among eight Anfield representatives in Sao Paulo, as a punishing brace from the latter handed the South Americans a 2-1 victory.
Immediately upon hearing the final whistle, Suarez made a beeline for his club colleague to offer some words of consolation as Gerrard contemplated a difficult situation for the Three Lions.
