Former Liverpool midfielder and fan favourite Xabi Alonso has hailed the unforgettable aura and enchantment of Anfield.

The 32-year-old, who is expected to play a leading role for Spain at the World Cup, was reflecting on his five-year spell with the Reds and representing the club in a special stadium.

It was the scene of some superb moments from Alonso, not least his 70-yard stunner against Newcastle United in September 2006.

"Anfield makes a huge impression on you, it motivates you," he told Canal+.

"It's a place with a lot of charm and for me, it's one of the temples of football - there aren't many but Anfield is one of them.

"It's a no-frills stadium but it's got a lot of soul."
