Former Liverpool forward Craig Bellamy has today announced his retirement as a player after almost two decades as a professional in the British game.

"The time has come to stand aside and say enough," he explained to Wales Online. "My body can't take any more."

The passionate Welshman is a member of an elite group to have represented the Reds in two separate spells, having initially joined in 2006 before returning five years later.

Blessed with searing pace, acute vision, outstanding technique and a sense of drive to match any opponent, Bellamy notched 18 goals in 79 appearances for the club.

Having originally switched to Anfield from Blackburn Rovers, he contributed to Liverpool's surge to the Champions League final in 2007, although watched from the bench during defeat by AC Milan.

The versatile attacker would lift a trophy with the club upon his return, though. In fact, it was his goal which downed Manchester City and carried the Reds to the 2012 Carling Cup showpiece and Wembley glory.

Bellamy also represented Newcastle United, West Ham United, City and hometown outfit Cardiff City across a lengthy career, providing relentless dedication to every side he played for.

The former Wales international won 78 caps for his country too, and now plans to complete qualifications in coaching and pursue a management career.
