As Liverpool prepare to host Chelsea in another crunch top-of-the-table clash at Anfield on Sunday, manager Brendan Rodgers has received a glowing endorsement of the job he has done at Liverpool from former boss Roy Evans.

With three games to go in the Barclays Premier League, Rodgers has guided his charges to the top of the tree by playing an exhilarating brand of football which has won many new admirers throughout the country and beyond.

Evans believes Rodgers deserves all the plaudits that have come his way so far, as he also acknowledged the support from the likes of assistant boss Colin Pascoe and first-team coach Mike Marsh.

"Brendan has done a fantastic job and deserves great credit," Evans told Liverpoolfc.com. "So do the rest of his staff, as they have also been first-class.

"The system Brendan has at Liverpool allows players to show their own individual talent and play football. Sometimes you get teams who just pass and pass and keep possession, but this team has a real cutting edge.

"We have so many individuals who can win us games at any given time. Luis Suarez can one minute score an absolutely fantastic goal and then the next minute you see him tackling back in his own half.

"Brendan has given the lads a freedom to express the ability that they have got and that is why we have been so successful.

"I think his man-management is excellent. You look at Luis, who is really enjoying his football and Brendan has got the very best out of him, there's Raheem Sterling who has come on in leaps and bounds under Brendan and is improving week after week.

"The team play for the manager and they believe what the manager is saying and that's always important when you've got to where we are at the moment, and hopefully we can stay there."

As Jose Mourinho's Chelsea get set to arrive on Merseyside on Sunday, three days before their Champions League semi-final decider with Atletico Madrid, there has been talk that the Portuguese could rest several regulars from the starting XI.

However, Evans insists he has no interest in what the opposition may or may not do tactically and instead prefers to focus on Liverpool's attacking prowess, which he insists is the key to winning the game.

He added: "We've just got to play the way we've been playing at the end of the day. We are where we are because we have played fantastic football throughout the season, always with an attacking outlook.

"If Daniel Sturridge is back, then all the better, but if not we have the likes of Suarez and Sterling who have been absolutely fantastic for us.

"To be in this position is brilliant but it's not over yet, that's for sure. Manchester City are hiding behind the rest and looking to sneak in on the blindside so we have to be careful, but all season we have played with a great tenacity and a great desire and we hope we can get there now."
