Liverpool's U17 squad suffered disappointment as they lost 2-1 to hosts Ajax in the final of the presitgious Aegon Futures Cup.

In the group stage the young Reds had beaten Ajax 2-0, so hopes were high when England youth international Sheyi Ojo gave Neil Critchley's side a first-half lead following a well worked set piece.

Harry Wilson then had a goal harshly disallowed before a comeback from the home side in the second half.

Ajax levelled just after the restart and then with just four minutes left to play an own goal gave Ajax the trophy.

Reflecting on the tournament, Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com: "We came to this tournament to test ourselves against some of the best young teams in football and we more than matched them.

"It has been a great experience for the players and it was an honour for us to be involved in this tournament and Ajax were perfect hosts.

"While we were disappointed to lose in the final it was freak own goal that decided it and we have a lot of positives to take from this."
