He played a part in helping Steven Gerrard lifting the biggest trophy of his career to date, but Vladimir Smicer is hoping there's plenty more glory ahead for the Liverpool captain.

The Czech forward was one of the heroes of Istanbul back in 2005, firing the Reds' crucial second goal in a pulsating 3-3 draw with AC Milan in the Champions League final before going on to net a decisive penalty in the shoot-out.

Now 40 years old, Smicer's professional playing days are long since over - but he's eager to see his old teammate Gerrard pick up even more trophies before the time comes to hang up his boots.

"Long after my career has finished, Stevie is still playing at such a high level," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"I was there when he really established himself in the team and he's still so important to Liverpool. I know how hard he works.

"He has shown his love for Liverpool over many years. He has always stayed loyal.

"He's a great midfielder and a great leader. He's such a strong character.

"If there was one reason why I wish they win the title this season it's for Stevie. He deserves it.

"If he could win the title with Liverpool at this late stage of his career it would be the perfect story."

After 184 appearances and 19 goals, Smicer's six-year Liverpool career came to an end after that dramatic night in Istanbul.

Nonetheless, the former No.7 (and No.11) remains an avid watcher of their fortunes and has been overjoyed with the form of Brendan Rodgers' men this season.

"I watch them nearly every week and they look very strong," said Smicer.

"They are playing great football and there is a lot of confidence in the team. Liverpool have the best attack in the league.

"If they become champions it would be a great dream for all the supporters of Liverpool Football Club and I count myself as one of them."
