He was never likely to forget the night that he helped Liverpool lift a fifth European Cup, but now former Reds defender John Arne Riise has a permanent reminder – by way of a tattoo.

The Norwegian played a significant part in kick-starting a comeback on May 25, 2005, swinging in a precise cross for Steven Gerrard to power home a header in the opening moments of the second half in Istanbul.

What happened next is now an indelible event in history, and although Riise actually missed from 12 yards in the shoot-out against AC Milan, the Reds could celebrate a victory unlike any witnessed before.

In memory of that unforgettable evening at the Ataturk Stadium, the current Fulham man revealed via Instagram, the social media platform, that he is inking his skin with a life-long reminder of winning the Champions League - the trophy and the date.

Riise spent seven years at Anfield after joining the club in the summer of 2001; the versatile wide-man also lifted the FA Cup and League Cup, made a total of 348 appearances and notched 31 goals.

The 33-year-old was the subject of an episode in LFC TV's new show 'Back of the Net' earlier this year - a programme which reflects on the magical contributions of a former Liverpool star. Click play below to watch.
