Mike Marsh believes Steven Gerrard is perfectly suited to play in the deep-lying midfield position and claims Brendan Rodgers may well have pulled off a master stroke utilising his skipper in this role.

The first-team coach admits the new responsibility is not alien to the inspirational Scouser having excelled there at international level - but claims he could play anywhere in the side, anyway.

"He's a world-class player," Marsh told Liverpoolfc.com.

"He has played in numerous positions before and it's another string to his bow.

"It's a position that's not new to him as he's played there on a number of occasions, particularly for England, so I think he'll only get better at it."

Marsh cited Gerrard's display in the Merseyside derby as a clear indication of what his new role can bring to the team.

He added: "I thought Stevie was outstanding on the night and you could see what the occasion meant to him from the way he celebrated his goal. I think he set me off actually!

"We've got a number of players who can play in that position and it just shows you what the manager thinks of Steven playing him in this new role."
