Henderson: That thought spurs us on
If any more incentive were needed for Liverpool to claim an eighth FA Cup this season, midfielder Jordan Henderson believes the heartbreak of defeat in the 2012 final can spur his colleagues on to go one better.
The No.14 was a regular member of the team which reached the Wembley showpiece almost two years ago, when Kenny Dalglish's side suffered a narrow 2-1 reverse against Chelsea in London.
Having successfully navigated a third-round clash with Oldham Athletic earlier in January, the next stage of the competition presents the Reds with a trip to Championship outfit Bournemouth.
For Henderson, the desire to hoist aloft the famous trophy is one that strongly pervades around the corridors of the club; he told Liverpoolfc.com: "When you go to Wembley and you lose a final it is hard to take.
"When you see them lifting the trophy, it gives you an extra motivation to come back and put it right. So that's our aim this year - to have a good run in the FA Cup and go and win it.
"We are definitely good enough to do so, but we've just got to make sure we are focused and prepare for every game in the right way.
"The aim is always to finish as high as you can in the league, push for the top four and possibly win the league, because at the end of the day we play for Liverpool and that's where we should be.
"From day one the aim was to be right up there at the top. It hasn't always worked out like that but we've got ourselves in a good position this season.
"But there's still a long way to go and we need to show what we did in the first half in the latter stages of the Premier League and also the FA Cup.
"It's a big few months for us as a team and as a club, so I'm sure everybody is looking forward to it."
It was in the fourth round 12 months ago that the Reds' last quest for FA Cup glory was unceremoniously halted with a surprising 3-2 defeat by Oldham away from home.
With that experience of a giant-killing in mind, Henderson pledged that there will be no chance of Brendan Rodgers' charges underestimating their lower-league opponents on Saturday.
The 23-year-old said: "We know they will be right up for it. We are away from home and the crowd will be right behind them.
"But we have got to go there and work just as hard as them, if not more, because they will make it very difficult for us.
"I'm sure we have enough quality here to go there, put in a good performance and get the result we want. We know it will be difficult but it's a challenge we look forward to.
"I'm not sure it will be more physical because in the Premier League it is very physical and there are players who are very physical.
"In terms of the lower league, it's a massive game for them because they don't play the likes of Liverpool or big teams every week.
"It's an opportunity for them to go and show that they can be up there with the best as a team and as players and individuals. We've got to be wary of that, be professional and do what we have been doing."
