He's been a Kop icon for more than a decade - and now Steven Gerrard is set to become a star of the screen by appearing in an advert for the brand new Xbox One console.

The Liverpool and England skipper has grown accustomed to performing for the cameras, having spent much of his glittering career under the media glare.

However, Gerrard's latest venture is something quite out of the ordinary as he lines up alongside the man who played Spock in Star Trek, Zachary Quinto, to feature in a global campaign. You can watch the ad now by clicking below.

Microsoft have launched their biggest ever advertising drive in anticipation of the launch of Xbox One on November 22 - and the Reds' skipper is at the very heart of their promotion.

The centre-piece of the launch, a slick 90-second advert, features Gerrard alongside gaming characters and celebrities as they beckon viewers to join them in the Xbox revolution.

Entitled 'Invitation', the short film is all about an invitation to fans to enter a new generation of gaming and entertainment - and is designed to reflect the level of immersion the console can bring to users.

And this is where Gerrard comes into the picture.

Decked out in his full Liverpool strip, the skipper stands before a packed stadium, poised to kick off from the centre-circle, before he turns and beckons a young fan onto the pitch to join him.

Gerrard's scene was filmed using state-of-the-art machinery at Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park in Liverpool - and afterwards the skipper told Liverpoolfc.com: "It's flattering to be picked for the advert by a huge brand like Xbox.

"It's growing all the time and there are kids all over the world who use Xbox. So to be picked out of thousands of top players out there is a nice touch from them and that's why I gave it my best.

"Hopefully the director's happy with what he's got from me!

"Years ago I used to love computer games but since the kids came along 10 years ago, I've had very little time to play on consoles, but I do now and again. I have a little go on the Tiger Woods games."

The scenes were directed by award-winning director Bryan Buckley with visual effects provided by The Mill, known for their production work on feature films such as Transformers, Gladiator and others.

The ad campaign features characters from top game titles such as Dead Rising 3, Rye and Titanfall, who also have their own special invite for viewers.

Xbox One is Microsoft's first launch of a new console since the Xbox 360 debuted in 2005 - and a blockbuster marketing campaign has been pieced together to launch to fans around the world.

Michael Flatt, head of advertising for Xbox and Microsoft in Europe, said: "This is a monumental production. It's been eight months in the making.

"It's a series of very simple but amazing invitations that confront people as they are going about their daily lives.

"One of those invitations involves Steven inviting a lucky 16-year-old kid from the stands to come and join him on the football pitch.

"Steven has been with Liverpool Football Club for 20 years and he is a man that has a huge following, not just in Liverpool, but globally.

"When you look at what Gerrard means to the Liverpool fans, it's unrivalled. There aren't many players who have that kind of hold amongst people.

"So he was a great choice and we're thrilled that Steven is involved with us."

The television campaign featuring Gerrard and co launched in the United States on October 27 during the Saturday Night Football show on NBC and will now roll out around the world prior to the launch of the console.
