Brendan Rodgers expects Aly Cissokho to build on his first start in the Barclays Premier League by providing a genuine challenge for the left-back berth in the Liverpool starting XI this season.

Following two brief appearances after his arrival on loan from Valencia in the summer, the Frenchman suffered a frustrating ankle injury which hampered his opening weeks at the club.

But, with teammate Jose Enrique currently experiencing a knee problem, the No.20 was handed a maiden start at Newcastle United last weekend and completed 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw.

Now Rodgers is confident that the 26-year-old defender can further establish himself in the Reds' team and stake a serious battle with Enrique for a regular spot at Anfield.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "Jose is still working to get over his injury so he's got no chance for the West Brom game but next week he won't be too far away.

"I've got no concerns about playing Aly. I thought he was excellent against Newcastle.

"Considering that was his first full Premier League game, he did really well. He got up into the advanced areas where we want to see him and put some great crosses in.

"He will only get better and in training this week he has been outstanding.

"His fitness is excellent and he knows the role well. He will provide really stiff competition for that position this season."
