Mamadou Sakho has been watching others and learning since he joined Liverpool last month, and fortunately for the French defender he is not short of role models to follow at Melwood.

The 23-year-old was the third centre-back brought to the club by Brendan Rodgers during the summer transfer window, alongside the experienced Kolo Toure and young prospect Tiago Ilori.

With Daniel Agger, Sebastian Coates and Martin Skrtel already at his disposal, the Northern Irish manager now has a wealth of options to choose from when selecting his defence for any match.

Sakho considers the situation to be wholly positive and is using sessions at the Reds' training complex as an opportunity to pick up tips and tricks from his new teammates.

"You always aspire to improve and get better," the No.17 told Liverpoolfc.com.

"The objective is always to be able to continue to work and progress. The competitive spirit that there is within the club is a very good thing. It helps every player to progress.

"I have had the opportunity to play with a lot of experienced players, all of the defenders that we have here. I try to adapt; I observe the qualities they bring to the play, I watch how they move.

"I'm here to progress and learn as well. It's a big advantage to play with players like Kolo, Skrtel and Agger in my position.

"I observe them a lot and always hope to progress using my own qualities but also learn from the examples that they provide."
