'One thing is guaranteed - goals'
Ian Rush expects Liverpool to return from St James' Park on Saturday with at least one point, but the Welshman is even more confident that there will be far more goals.
The Reds have scored more times against Newcastle United than any other team in the Barclays Premier League, famously downing the Magpies 4-3 at Anfield twice during the 1990s.
Rush made a cameo appearance in the first of those dramatic triumphs, playing a part in creating the winner for Stan Collymore, and he would not be surprised by a similar result today.
The 51-year-old told Liverpoolfc.com: "I'm expecting goals. One thing is for certain with Liverpool v Newcastle - there are always goals.
"Liverpool had a great win there last year, Philippe Coutinho was on form. There have been lots of goals at Anfield - 4-3 games - so I'm expecting goals in the game and Liverpool to come out without losing.
"Newcastle are leaking goals, but it's how you accommodate to counter that. Their supporters want to see the team attack.
"I've seen Liverpool win 4-3; strangely enough, Newcastle are most probably happy losing 4-3 rather than winning 1-0. That came under Kevin Keegan - they like to attack and attack and attack.
"Sometimes that can be their downfall, especially when they are playing at home. That's where Liverpool, and Brendan Rodgers, are very good at counter-attacking."
Rodgers' side were imperious 6-0 victors in the corresponding fixture last season, and the hosts will be without captain Fabricio Coloccini this time around.
"It will help Liverpool, he's a class player. If Newcastle don't have him, it will be a boost to Liverpool," Rush reflected.
"He's a defender and if Newcastle are going to do anything, they have to stop Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge because they are both on top form.
"But they have still got to go up there and get the result that's required, because Newcastle are a good team on their day. It's whether they go straight at Liverpool.
"If they go straight at Liverpool, it will play into Liverpool's hands because Liverpool will hit them on the break. I think they will maybe learn a lot from last year, the way they played, so it will be interesting to see how Newcastle plan the game out."
