The Football Association has confirmed that Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has been withdrawn from the England squad to face Moldova and Ukraine in World Cup qualifying next week.

Johnson suffered an injury during the Reds' 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday and was substituted by manager Brendan Rodgers with 12 minutes remaining at Anfield.

The 29-year-old was one of four Reds players originally selected for the double-header by Roy Hodgson, alongside Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge.

England are currently second in Group H and trail Montenegro by two points, although Hodgson's side have a game in hand.

At his post-match press conference, Rodgers said of Johnson: "He took a bad knock - he turned onto his ankle.

"He's getting treatment at the moment. It's obviously quite bad for him to come off, but I'll just need to see after."
