Brendan Rodgers is still targeting a Champions League place this season - though he admits it is a tough ask.

The Reds sit 12th in the Barclays Premier League but with three home games before Christmas, they have every opportunity to close the 10-point deficit to fourth.

Rodgers was encouraged by the performance of his side in the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham on Wednesday.

"Fourth place is a massive ask but that has to be our target," he told newspaper reporters. "Our objective is to hang onto the coat tails and give ourselves a fighting chance moving into January.

"The table is very tight and over the course of the next month we need to turn these good performances into winning performances.

"If you look at the players, they are giving everything. My job is to keep that confidence in the group because eventually it will change whether it is through one or two extra additions or whether one or two find some form and get some goals.

"I've always been very optimistic in my life. I grew as a young coach and a manager by always thinking positively. I have got a vision of where I want us to go and I believe we are on track. I see a group that is motivated and very committed to the cause.

"If you have got that as your core, then you have got a chance. Then it comes down to quality.

"I spoke to Steven Gerrard after Tottenham and he said it was the best Liverpool have played there in 12 years going to White Hart Lane.

"We are creating enough pressure and getting enough of the ball. If we get one or two to really finish it off we can go on a great run."

Meanwhile, Rodgers revealed the club's strategy in January will be to act quickly.

"I think we will hopefully be able to do business at the beginning," he said.http://analytics.spongecell.com/placements/49901187?ad_version=PLATFORM&type=IMPRESSION&iid=dcb7-zixz-Auq9-bsv9&external_placement_id=89268688&external_site_id=N2121.270717.MIRRORONLINE&flight_id=11284&creative_id=276060&e=mc2

"That was our strategy coming out of August - that we could get that support at the beginning of the month. That's the idea and if we could do that it would be a big boost for us.

"I have always thought that if you have three-and-a-half goalscorers in your team, you have got a chance.

"We have got Luis Suarez, and Steven Gerrard will get goals. If we can add a couple more who instinctively get into the box and get goals, with the domination that we are having in games, then we have got a chance in the second half of the season.

"I don't need to sell anyone. It is about building the squad and trying to make it competitive, adding numbers to it. We are going into a month that if we can hang on in there, keep the performance level up and pick up some points then we can kick on."
