Liverpool rewarded the hard work and dedication of Anfield's un-sung heroes prior to Sunday's home encounter with Manchester City.

At the end of each season, stewards and turnstile operators are nominated by their supervisors for formal recognition taking into account their attendance and overall contribution to their team and their contribution to match day safety at Anfield.

A certificate and small token is presented to one member of each stadium stand, turnstile operator, head steward and an individual operating in a specialist role in recognition of their outstanding contributions.

On Sunday, this year's recipients were presented with their certificates by Kop legend Ian Callaghan on the Anfield pitch.

They were: Stephen Lawrence (head steward), Paul Treanor (safety section), Maxine Martin (Anfield Road), Colin Sharrock (Centenary Stand), Nigel Mealor (Main Stand), Kenny Gambell (Kop) and Tim Gibnet (turnstile section).

Behind the scenes on a match day is a significant operation involving some 670 stewards and turnstile operators, all of whom play a key role not only in relation to supporters' enjoyment of the occasion but more importantly their safety .

Ged Poynton, stadium and operations manager, said: "All of the stewards at Anfield play an integral role not only in the supporters' enjoyment of their day but more importantly their safety.

"The Steward Awards were set up as it is important that these stewards get the recognition they deserve, and having Ian Callaghan to give out the awards really made their day.

"Liverpool FC is renowned for its passion and these stewards epitomise this passion with their excellent contribution to match days at Anfield."
