Local school children received a special treat at Tuesday night’s EFL quarter-final tie with Leeds United when Reds legend Robbie Fowler dropped by to surprise them.

Pupils from Anfield Road Primary School, Four Oaks Primary School, St Francis de Sales and North Liverpool Academy were invited to Anfield, where they enjoyed the 2-0 win from an executive box donated by the club’s main sponsor, Standard Chartered.

Their evening was made even more memorable when former Liverpool striker Fowler surprised them by popping in for a quick chat at half-time.

Joseph, from Anfield Road Primary School, said: “I had an amazing time on Tuesday night. I felt so fortunate to watch the game from Standard Chartered’s box and it was even better that Liverpool won and we got to meet Fowler.”

Mr Griffiths, deputy headteacher at Anfield Road Primary, added: “I just wanted to take the opportunity to say a massive thank you from the children for such a once in a lifetime experience. The children and I absolutely loved the match and being in the Executive Box and meeting ‘God’.”

Also in attendance were a group of young cancer patients from local charity CHICS (Children’s Cancer Support).

Avid Reds supporters Jenny, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and Luke, who has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, were among several guests invited to the game.

Jenny, 24, said: “We had such a wonderful experience at the Liverpool game on Tuesday night.”

Luke, 21, added: “We can’t thank everyone enough for this opportunity - we owe a massive thank you to everyone at LFC for their efforts in arranging this.”

CHICS Family Support Worker Eddie Hincks said: “The impact a treat of this kind can make is immeasurable.

“Young people in this age bracket are often forgotten about, so it’s great to share these wonderful opportunities out between the full range of children and young adults being treated for cancer.

“As their support worker, it’s great to see the patients afterwards – the effect it has on them is wonderful.”

Over 130 children and young people attended the EFL Cup fixture as part of the club’s Young Fan Ticket Initiative, which aims to give more local and young supporters the chance to experience a matchday at Anfield.
