John McCartney was a tough-tackling half-back who played in Liverpool’s first-ever season in the Football League (1893-94) on 16 occasions.
Liverpool were promoted as Second Division champions but made an immediate return to Division Two a year later after losing the Test Match to Bury at Ewood Park, Blackburn.
John missed a number of matches in the regular season of 1895-96 as Liverpool again won the Second Division title but played in all four of the Tests as the club regained its First Division status. John remained at Anfield for another two seasons, being an ever-present in 1896-97 and missing just three matches a year later.
