William's brief Liverpool career consisted of just four matches. He played in the last two fixtures of the 1927-28 season, at home to Tottenham Hotspur and away to Manchester United respectively, but he had to wait until the middle of November 1929 before he figured for the first-team again, this time in an away game with Aston Villa.
His fourth and final appearance came seven days later at Anfield against Leeds United.
Murray later became Barrow's captain in Third Division North.
