Post Manchester City launched 20 shots on Liverpool’s goal during the 90 minutes, compared to 12 by the away side, although five of the Reds’ efforts forced Joe Hart into work.
Post @LuchoGarcia14: Liverpool 1 vs M.City 2. Boxing day that the reds deserved more.
Post Despite a valiant display at the Etihad, that result ends our four-match winning streak and means the Reds slip to fourth in the Premier League.
94 FULL-TIME: Liverpool are beaten 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.
90 Four minutes added on...
90 First Booking: Luis Suarez: Foul on Hart.
88 Suarez sees a claim for a penalty rejected, while Toure whips a strike wide. Minutes left on the clock now.
85 Substitution: Javi Garcia for David Silva:
84 First Booking: Victor Moses: Foul on Zabaleta.
82 ...the No.7 steps up but his long-ranger flies over the crossbar.
82 Suarez wins a free-kick in a central position around 30 yards out...
81 10 minutes left for the Reds to get something from this game.
80 Substitution: Iago Aspas for Lucas Leiva:
79 First Booking: Pablo Zabaleta: Foul on Moses.
75 Substitution: Edin Dzeko for Alvaro Negredo:
74 Silva dribbles along the left and picks out Negredo at the far post - his header is again kept out by Mignolet.
72 Should be 2-2.... Suarez sprints down the left wing and delivers an awesome cross to the back post which Sterling can only volley far too high.
71 Substitution: James Milner for Samir Nasri:
69 It's non-stop now; Henderson backheels a cute effort towards the corner - stopped by Hart.
68 Opportunity for Johnson as a Henderson cross is cleared favourably but the defender cannot arrange his feet quickly enough. Unlucky.
68 Mignolet then catches a strong Negredo header well.
68 Skrtel required to produce another crucial block to ensure Kompany couldn't convert at the near post from a wicked, sliding cross into the area.
67 Substitution: Victor Moses for Philippe Coutinho:
66 First Booking: Glen Johnson: Foul on Kolarov.
63 Vital block by Lucas as David Silva trained his sights on a curler. Meanwhile, Victor Moses looks to be joining the action soon...
59 Negredo, full of confidence, tries an audacious chip over the Reds' 'keeper but Mignolet moves effectively to catch.
56 Kompany diverts another City corner towards the Liverpool goal but, on this occasion, it's a simple take for Mignolet.
53 @paul_tomkins: Reds having better of this half. Responding well.
51 Sterling clips a precise ball over the City defence in search of Henderson, but Hart just about handles the threat. Good start by the Reds here.
49 Twisting and turning by Suarez from the far side creates a small amount of space, which the striker uses to lash an attempt at the near post. Hart is equal to it.
48 Fantastic, driven cross from the right by Glen Johnson forces Kompany to concede a corner with Suarez waiting.
47 Nice work by Allen and Suarez sets up Jordan Henderson for an ambitious, outside-of-the-foot curler which doesn't trouble Hart.
45 Liverpool are back out for the second half...
45 The statistics from the first half show dominance in City's favour; the hosts have recorded 57.5 per cent possession and registered 12 shots to the Reds' five.
45 @GaryLineker: Wonderful game of end to end football. The Premier League at its most thrilling.
45 HALF-TIME: Liverpool go into the break behind after that late Negredo goal.
45 The Reds fall behind as the home side counter-attack quickly and Navas finds Negredo in space; the Spaniard toe-pokes an attempt which Mignolet can't quite handle and the ball rolls in.
45 GOAL! Alvaro Negredo:
43 Now Negredo thinks he is going to score, having been slipped through, but Skrtel recovered to block the forward's shot at the expense of a corner.
41 Coutinho denied an outrageous second by Hart! The No.10, Suarez and Sterling combine superbly to move from the Reds' box to the City penalty area. But in the final action, Coutinho's side-footer was palmed clear by the England goalkeeper.
36 End to end here and highly entertaining, although City have had the most recent highlight - Nasri slightly working Mignolet with a drilled shot.
33 City break rapidly on the counter-attack from a Liverpool corner and it's Navas racing down the left flank with menacing intentions - ultimately, the Spaniard smashes over, though.
31 The home side have quickly pegged Liverpool back, with Kompany the first to meet a near-post corner and power a header over the goalline despite the best efforts of Allen at the back post.
30 GOAL! Vincent Kompany:
27 @1stLadyOfFooty: Great stuff from Suarez and Henderson in the build-up to #LFC's opener as well. Their link-up always seems to produce the goods.
25 Liverpool lead and it's Coutinho, who capitalises on a brisk Reds move, which saw Sterling break through yet again and round Hart cleverly. The Brazilian No.10 was placed perfectly to tap into an empty net.
25 GOAL! Philippe Coutinho:
24 Coutinho completes a delightful pass into Joe Allen, supporting the attack, but the Welshman miscontrolled and the chance passed.
21 @neiljonesecho: Promising signs in Sterling's running from deep for Liverpool. Twice he's latched onto Suarez passes. Kolarov did well the first time.
19 Suarez again plays Sterling clear in behind the City defence and the winger blasts past Hart. The linesman's flag is up but replays then show Sterling was comfortably onside.
18 Now Alvaro Negredo clips a cross in by Kolarov the wrong side of Simon Mignolet's post.
17 Our No.7 stands over a set-piece 30 yards out and his low curler is collected easily by Joe Hart.
16 A sensational piece of skill by Suarez fools Joleon Lescott and the Uruguayan bursts forward; when he releases Raheem Sterling, though, the No.31 is blocked out.
14 Luis Suarez leaps highest from a Liverpool corner but his glanced attempt goes wide.
12 First effort on goal from the powerful Yaya Toure, who latches onto a one-two but directs his left-footer bobbling off-target.
10 Nasri whips in a dangerous corner which connects with centre-back Vincent Kompany - the Belgian's header carries wide under pressure from Skrtel.
9 City attack down their right side again and, once more, Skrtel is called upon to clear when Pablo Zabaleta centred the ball.
6 Really bright start by Manchester City so far; Liverpool still searching for a foothold in the game.
5 Excellent block by Martin Skrtel to deny Samir Nasri, who was played into space - then Jesus Navas nods a downward header onto the far post.
3 At the other end, Philippe Coutinho works freedom to shoot at goal but the strike is wide and low to the left.
2 The hosts are enjoying possession in the early stages and Lucas Leiva was required to make an important challenge in the area.
