25 Sep 2013, KO: 19:45

Minute by minute

Post That’s all from us in Manchester. Thanks, as always, for following our coverage this evening. We’ll be back on Sunday, when the Reds travel to Sunderland in the Barclays Premier League. YNWA.
Post @kennethdalglish: Will win more than lose if there are repeat performances of that quality.
Post @NeilMellor33: Disappointing to lose to another goal from a corner. Encouraging signs with Suarez back and thought the displayed deserved more.
Post Browse around the website now for a match report and full photo gallery from Old Trafford, the post-match thoughts of Luis Suarez and the best of Brendan Rodgers’ press conference.
Post “The result is not good because we lost but the feeling is good because we played very well, we created chances and we missed,” Suarez told post-match. See the homepage for more details.
Post Tune into LFC TV’s post-match show now to watch exclusive interviews with Brendan Rodgers and Luis Suarez.
Post “The players have made an excellent start. Tonight they have given everything – now we can only concentrate on the league through to Christmas. Hopefully we can reinforce again in January.”
Post Brendan Rodgers is conducting his post-match press conference; “The team was in a good flow in the second half, getting numbers forward. We just couldn’t find that final pass,” the boss says.
Post The Reds also edged possession on the evening, enjoying 53 per cent of the ball against United. Brendan Rodgers’ team racked up 11 corners too.
Post It was certainly an exciting match at Old Trafford, with 35 shots in total – 17 of those registered by Liverpool, although only three were on target.
Post The Reds have been eliminated from the 2013-14 Capital One Cup at the third-round stage – that early second-half goal by Javier Hernandez proved enough for Manchester United.
90 Substitution: Danny Welbeck for Nani:
89 Suarez wins possession on the right flank and lays in Toure for an attempt – wide.
88 Henderson nearly catches out De Gea with a cross-shot but the Spaniard claws it away.
87 ...Suarez strikes into the wall.
87 Terrific dribbling by Sterling wins a free-kick in a good, central position...
85 Time running down now...can the Reds force extra-time?
81 Substitution: Raheem Sterling for Victor Moses:
80 10 minutes left at Old Trafford.
79 Intricate passing from Suarez plays Sturridge in behind but when the Englishman tries to return the ball, United clear the danger.
76 Wayne Rooney smashes another strike goalwards and our No.22 is equal again.
76 @Mark5Wright: Impressed with the Lfc performance-unlucky not to be winning this.
76 Rooney now curls a set-piece around the Liverpool wall and Mignolet has to palm away.
75 First Booking: Jordan Henderson:
74 Substitution: Michael Carrick for Shinji Kagawa:
73 Substitution: Adnan Januzaj for Javier Hernandez:
72 From the free-kick, Suarez curls a superb effort onto the crossbar with the aid of a slight deflection. Very unlucky.
71 First Booking: Phil Jones:
71 Outstanding save by De Gea! Enrique lobs a brilliant cross into the area for a Moses diving header – but the Spanish ‘keeper punches it away.
70 Another Liverpool corner is cleared but only to Suarez – the Uruguayan instantly beats his marker but his left-footed piledriver is the wrong side of the post for the Reds.
68 Martin Kelly is now on the right, with Henderson moving to a central position.
67 Substitution: Martin Kelly for Lucas Leiva:
65 At the other end, an onrushing Enrique times his support well to smack with his left foot from an angle, but sees his hit fly wide.
64 Kagawa suddenly adopts a more direct approach, spinning around Lucas, travelling forward and thrashing a left-footed dipper towards Mignolet. It possibly brushes the bar on its way narrowly over.
60 Next Nani tries an acrobatic volley from a left-wing cross: high and wide too.
59 Back come United with a quickfire counter-attack; Kagawa eventually sets up Nani with an ideal opportunity for a second, but the Portuguese attacker scuffs his effort.
58 Another drive by our No.7 from a central position, and another corner to the Reds.
55 Suarez collects possession and dribbles forward on and on, without challenge, until a shot is demanded and then blocked. Decent response from Rodgers’ men here.
54 That’s our best chance so far…a combination of Moses, Sturridge and Suarez swarm forward and the ball arrives at Henderson – the midfielder goes for placement from 20 yards but the strike is wide.
51 First Booking: Kolo Toure: Foul on Rooney.
50 Rooney retorts by smashing a vicious curler from 20 yards which is thankfully far too high to further trouble Mignolet.
48 A chance for an immediate response as Moses glides forward and slips through Sturridge; the striker is crowded out by the home defence, though, and the opportunity is gone.
46 Hernandez is first to an inswinging corner at the near post to side-foot beyond Mignolet for 1-0.
46 GOAL! Javier Hernandez:
45 The two teams are on their way back out.
45 Make sure to check out our Opta chalkboards below, which show just how Brendan Rodgers’ fluid formation is working this evening.
45 @henrywinter: #mufc 0 #lfc 0 ht. United decent start/end. Liverpool bright & busy for 20 mins in middle. Jose Enrique some good deliveries. Not a classic
45 @SamWallaceIndy: HT: 0-0. United faded quickly after bright-ish start. Liverpool in ascendancy for much of the 1st half. Old Trafford pensive & quiet
45 Despite both sides creating a handful of promising chances, it’s goalless at the break.
45 One minute added on.
43 @DietmarHamann: United there for the taking.LFC well in control, got to score while on top.
42 Hernandez twists and turns around a succession of Liverpool challenges and unleashes from 25 yards – not for the first time, it’s Skrtel with the block.
41 First Booking: Ryan Giggs: Foul on Moses.
39 First Booking: Lucas Leiva: Foul on Phil Jones.
34 @DominicKing_DM: If @LFC are going to progress to the next round, they have to make this spell of dominating possession count. Look a different team from Sat
33 Close for Sturridge! Henderson scurries down the right and picks out his teammate with a low centre – the striker deftly flicks the ball but Smalling is in the way to guide the attempt over.
31 Hernandez has been full of energy for the home side and he almost combines with Kagawa to break into the Liverpool area but Skrtel covers effectively to thwart our opponents.
26 Suarez and Sturridge combine again but the latter is forced wide and his effort is deflected behind for a corner.
23 It’s a bright spell for the visitors and Jordan Henderson releases Sturridge in the left channel, but Chris Smalling produces some smart defending to shepherd the No.15 away.
22 Sensational, curling cross from the left by Enrique lands perfectly for Suarez; he could have volleyed but tries to take control and David De Gea rushes out rapidly to smother. Unlucky.
20 Suarez now turns provider, completing a beautiful one-two with Sturridge. The latter races in behind the United defence and hits a toe-poker which carries wide of the near post.
19 Enrique then attempts to tee up the No.7 in the box but his touch lets him down on this occasion.
18 First strike at goal for Suarez, assisted after good work from Moses down the right - quickly blocked, however.
16 Just the briefest of lulls at the moment following a frenetic start.
13 Rafael sends a low cross into the danger area and there is Skrtel once more to boot it out.
12 Great play from Liverpool: Suarez takes possession on the left wing and feeds Enrique, who clips a delicate cross in the direction of Sturridge. United have to concede a corner, although they clear the subsequent delivery.
11 Kagawa tries again from the same position with a lofted curler - over.
9 They are taking turns – Shinji Kagawa works a yard at the left corner of Liverpool’s box; his low drive towards the near post is comfortable for Simon Mignolet to retrieve, though.
7 Now it’s Wayne Rooney who creates space at the edge of the area for a shot at goal – Martin Skrtel gets his body in the way at the expense of another corner.
6 The move breaks down, however, despite Jose Enrique's best efforts to claim the loose ball.
5 Daniel Sturridge is pushed over in full flow and the Reds have a promising free-kick...
4 It has been a strong, aggressive start from the hosts.
3 A dangerous cross from the lively Nani is directed towards Hernandez but again the forward’s connection lacks power. Nani then collects possession and blasts at goal – deflected wide for a corner.
1 A clearing header from Mamadou Sakho falls kindly to Javier Hernandez in the opening minute, just inside the Liverpool area, but the Mexican’s drive is blocked.

Pre Victor Moses, meanwhile, had this to say about the match: "Whenever United play Liverpool, it is always a massive game which anyone in the world would like to watch. Now I am a Liverpool player, you have to look forward to it and hopefully we can win the game.
